History and Personality: Ryo is considered the greatest Digimon Tamer, but he disappeared a year ago and had been in the Digital World ever since. He helped Rika, Kazu, and Kenta when a Megadramon was attacking them. He came and went as he was needed.
It turned out Ryou was the only person who ever defeated Rika in a Card Tournament, previous to the one where she won. He has a positive attitude, and seems to be a very good person all the way around. He's also very brave and is willing to help others. He doesn't know how he came to be in the Digital World but he remains to watch over Cyberdramon, his digimon. Cyberdramon was apparently infected with some sort of virus. Due to the fact he stayed in the Digital World so long, his entire body is pretty much data. As a result, he could Biomerge with Cybedramon and become Justimon.
Ryo's a nice boy, but Rika hates him because he helped her (go figure). His dad was mad at him because he was missing for three years.
At the end of the season, Rika and Ryo actually seem to like each other. He called her "Pumpkin" and "Wildcat Rika", and she called him "Twerp" and "Hero-Boy". Plus, there is evidence of this when she trusts him enough to let him have her power for his blade (inside D-reaper), then he grabs her (since she has no power left). He holds her until the battle is basically over. When their Digimon leave, you can see in that Rika and Ryo are standing next to each other. When the digimon are gone you can see them staring at each other.
Apparently Ryo was also in Season 2. When Ken first got sucked into the Digital World, he met Wormmon and Ryo. Ryo tended to Ken's injury from the Dark Spore before sending him back home.
Relationships: Ryo is a friendly, caring guy all the way around so he gets along well with everyone. The only two deeper relationships we see for him are with Cyberdramon and with Rika. (And we're kinda out on a limb with the Rika thing...)
Obviously Ryo cares very much about his digimon - it's the reason he stays in the Digital World. Sadly for most of his time during the season Cyberdramon is under the influence of a virus. He is cold and difficult to control. Still, Ryo won't give up on him and eventually saves him.
The relationship between Ryo and Rika is ambiguous at best. He is friendly to her because... well, he's friendly to everyone. And she hates him because... well, she hates everyone - except that she hates him more because he's better than she is. So Rika tries to fight with Ryo, and Ryo smiles and apologizes which makes her even more angry. But when it comes down to it Ryo is the one she trusts. As for the love thing... it's more in those last looks than in anything else. Plus, they're cute together. And he's probably the only one of those guys who could handle her.
Trivia: Ryo also makes appearances in four video games.
Why we love him: Nice, brave, willing to sacrifice anything to help anyone, and for once without (most of) the brooding. He has a laid back friendly attitude, but totally kicks butt and he's completely without conceit.
