History and Personality: The leader of the Sekihoutai (a group of farmers turned military unit), he fought with the Imperialists for a Japan of equality only to be betrayed by his own allies. the Imperialists. When they could not fulfill the promises they had made to the common people of Japan they pinned the blame on the Sekihoutai and killed them all. Captain Sagara was a man of honor, courage, and kindness even up to the end. He took in Sanosuke and anyone else who needed help, and he protected Sano with the last of his life without concern for himself. Because of this Sanosuke respects him more than any one else and takes his last name as him own (contrary to what you may have read elsewhere Sano did not change his family name he merely took one on... he did not have one before as the common people of Japan did not have the right to a last name before the revolution).
Relationships: Because he is such a minor character the only relationship we see in Souzou's life is his relationship to Sano. He is Sano's leader, and something between a father and a brother figure to him. It is obvious that he cared for Sano, and that Sano has great respect for him.
Why we love him: Gorgeous, honorable, takes in orphans and fights for justice and equality for those less fortunate for himself? Are you stupid? Blind? Why wouldn't we love him! Seriously though? I've been obsessed with him since the first time they showed his picture... no idea why.
