History and Personality: Tamahome is the first of the Suzaku warriors to be found by Miaka - and it's entirely on accident (as she hasn't even been "discovered" as the priestess yet.).  Upon her arrival in the Universe of the Four Gods she and Yui are attacked and Tamahome rescues them only to demand payment! Later he rescues Miaka again and decides to look after her as he would a little sister.  In fact, later he confesses that until they were seperated for several months (of his time) that is exactly how he saw her!

At first portrayed as greedy and only seems to want to help out when he is paid, later on in the series it is revealed that he only acts greedy for a special cause. He is tough on the inside, but also very shy. He fell in love with Miaka after she confessed her love to him and was struck ill. He sacrifices himself for the sake of others, and won't back down against an enemy. He is in love with Miaka. Their love transcends worlds. He cares for all the Suzaku-seishi and is deeply wounded when some of them die. Though their relationship goes through many trials, including a trip to the real world where Tamahome discovers he is only a character in a book, Tamahome realizes that he was created for Miaka and she is all that matters to him. Together they defeat Nakago and Seiryu, but are forced to separate.

Miaka's wanted her last wish was for her and Tamahome to be together forever. Encouraged by her warriors and by Taiitsukun, Miaka hoped that her heart's desire would be granted. Her spoken last wish however was asking Suzaku to save the world and return it to normal. Her warriors are shocked and even comment on how "so completely unselfish" it is. A month later, after her middle school graduation, Miaka's older brother Keisuke introduced her to a new classmate of his, Taka Sukunami. Taka remembered a past life when he was one of seven destined to protect a young girl who would save their world from destruction. He remembered that he was once called Tamahome, but he didn't remember any particular details about his former life. The two become a couple.

During a class field trip to the Takamatsuzuka Tomb in Nara, Suzaku reached out to Miaka to aid him on a quest. A demon lord was threatening The Universe of the Four Gods and her world, and Miaka was once again needed to save the world. Taka is taken by Tomo, but eventually is freed by with the help of Nakago (of all people). The demon is defeated but Taka has to remain in the book to close the link between the worlds.  Taiitskun gives Tamhome the chance to go back one more - if he will give up all his memories.  Believing that his love for Miaka is destiny he agrees and his memories are scattered as seven stones.  In the real world Miaka soon runs into Taka once more, who cannot remember her from the Universe of the Four Gods (and probably can't remember their previous relationship in the real world either).  The two once again become a couple. However, things aren't peaceful for long. Though the love between Miaka and Tamahome was a strong source of Suzaku's powers, and their being together in the real world gave him some power there he was still weak outside the Universe of the Four Gods. The Demon God (later revealed to be Tenko) realized this and attempted to usurp the powers of heaven and destroy both worlds.

Suzaku charged Miaka with the quest of retrieving seven stones (one which had already been recovered) which contained Tamahome's memories. When Tamahome's memories were placed back into Taka, Suzaku's powers would be restored and Tenko could be sealed away once more.  On this journey Taka is forced to fight the manifestation of his own memories and decide if he is Tamahome or Taka.  Again he decides that all that really matters is his attachment to Miaka and he absorbs his memory self back into himself.  Suzaku then reveals that Taka existed before Tamahome - and that because of the love Taka and Miaka would share he "borrowed" Taka as a template to create Tamahome to help Miaka and to give himself strength (since he draws power from their love). Taka and Miaka then reunited to retrieve the power of Suzaku.  After this the two are given the choice of which world they want to live in, and are urged to choose the real world.  They return and are married.

In the second set of OVAs Taka is dragged into the book without Miaka due to the book world falling apart on itself.  The book was thrown into chaos when two priestesses were chosen at the same time, and began to create false beast gods in an attempt to stabilize itself.  Miaka, thorough a student of Taka, and Taka, along with the other warriors manage to save the book world and Taka is able to return to a very pregnant Miaka.

Taka Sukunami stats-

  • Real Name: Taka Sukunami
  • Constellation: Gemini
  • Date Of Birth: June 18
  • Age: 18
  • Height: 1.80m (about 5 feet, 11 inches)
  • Bloodtype: O
  • Birthplace: Saitama Prefecture, Japan
  • Family: Parents, a younger brother, and a younger sister who run a farm in the country, wife (Miaka Yuki) and child (Hikari). (Many people continue to debate on whether Hikari is a male or a female.)
  • Hobbies: Making money, basketball
  • Occupation: Shourinji Kempo Coach, formerly a waiter in Café Paradox (fired)
  • Voice Actors: Hikaru Midorikawa (Japanese), David Hayter (English)

Relationships: Tamahome first sees Miaka as a little sister, and would gladly give his life for her.  However, when she returns home for three months of time in the book he realizes that his love for her is actually of the romantic kind.  Fortunately he's not afraid to admit that... unfortunately everything in the world seems to want to stand between them. If it isn't Yui trying to win him over, it's Taiitskune telling Miaka she can't touch any guys, or Nakago making Miaka think she's dirty, or someone telling them Suzaku won't be able to keep them together... it's just one thing after another, but nothing can keep these two apart.  Their love is storng enough to conquer anything, and, yeah, it even saves the world (so cheesy to say, but not so cheesy in the anime usually...)

Tamahome isn't afraid to care about people, so he's fairly close to all the warriors, but he's a little sidetracked by Miaka usually... so he doesn't spend much time with anyone else. He has an interesting dynamic with Hotohori and with Tasuki, and is probably closest to them despite the fact that both other men are also in love with Miaka.

Tamahome is very close to all of his family members as well.  Before he meets Miaka everything he doe is for them.

Techniques: Tamahome's weapons are generally his fists (and feet). Good at martial arts and street fighting in general, he has the ability to channel his ki into energy blasts and when emotionally motivated he can sometimes use his ki to increase his strength, speed and reflexes in combat. He is also experienced in fencing (trained by Tokaki).  When Tamahome is under Nakago's control he fights with tasekkon, which are similar to nunchaaku (Nunchuks).

Trivia: Tamahome can often be found counting his money, and will obsess over a single lost coin.  the only thing that can distract him from money is Miaka... and even then only briefly.

Why we love him: Aren't we supposed to?  he's the love interest in a shoujo!  We'd be stupid not to think he's amazing (unless you're a rebel and refuse to like him just because you know you're supposed to.) Handsome, strong, protective, loyal, sincere, with a heart of gold and just enough quirks not to get boring ^_^  Yay Tamakins!!!
