History and Personality:   He's been friends with Momo since junior high school. Quiet, sincere, athletic, but a little slow when it comes to romance, Toji's pretty much a normal guy. He has no clue Momo likes him and is too honest and straight-forward to perceive Sae's deceptions. Although initially a pawn in Sae's evil schemes, Toji eventually gains a more active part in the plot.

Though Momo was told in Middle School that Toji doesn't like girls with tans (the reason for her obsessive application of sunblock) Toji was misquoted to her.  Toji dislikes the kind of girls who go to tanning alons and bleach their hair and wear heavy make-up (there's a name for this particular breed of 'bimbo' in Japanese, but I can't for the life of me remember it right now).  In fact, Toji has actually defended Momo and her (quite natural) tan to other members of the student population.  He likes her, but is too clueless to realize that she's been in love with him forever. AFter a whole bunch of misunderstandings he becomes her boyfriend only to stumble into a whole new set of misunderstandings thanks to the scheming "friend" Sae.  In the early part of their relationship Momo and Toji haven't built enough trust in one another to keep from arguing when Sae makes up lies, but  they love each other enough to stick together despite that.  Eventually, with Kiley's help, the two become close enough that Sae's usual lies and tricks won't work.  Just when things are finally looking up, Sae blackmails poor Toji into dumping Momo and dating her.  Because she is threatening Momo, Toji agrees.  By the time Sae has tired of him (because she only wants what Momo has, and Momo doesn't have him anymore) Momo is dating Kiley, and Toji is too nice a guy to interfere.  But when a wrench gets thrown in the works for Momo and Kiley Toji is right there to pick up the pieces of Mom's broken heart. The two rebuild a true friendship and eventually become a couple once more.  However, when complications arise with Kiley once more, Toji forces Momo to make a final decision - him or Kiley.  Although her choice to go to Kiley hurts him deeply we are left with the impression that his greatest wish is for her happiness, and that the friendship will not die.

Relationships: Having known Momo (and defended her without her knowledge) for quite some time, Toji is probably one of her few true friends.  He is her initial love interest and twice becomes her boyfriend, though in the end he lets her go.  It is clear from the very beginning that Toji cares for Momo regardless of what others might say about her.  There are some definite rocky spots in their relationship, as in the beginning of their dating relationship he sometimes takes the word of others over Momo's, but eventually the two become very close.  There is no doubt that Toji truly loves Mom and wants what is best for her, even if it is not himself.

Because Kiley is his "rival" for Momo's affections Toji does not like him much at all.  In fact, it's likely he and Kiley wouldn't have gotten along even without the complication of Momo because Toji is serious and Kiley is a clown and a flirt.  However, when he is forced to rely on Kiley's help to 'rescue' Momo (usually from Sae) he does grow to respect the other boy at least in some small part.

At first Toji doesn't understand Sae's manipulative personality, and he easily falls prey to her traps regarding Momo.  However, experience is a good teacher and he soon learns to be wary of the little backstabber.  With some clever blackmail Sae forces him to become her boyfriend for a time, but, though he is never outright rude to her, he never comes to care for her.

Why we love him: he's a nice, solid, reliable guy who'll do anything to protect the girl he loves - even if it means he has to watch from the sidelines.  Talk about devotion!  So what if he's a little slow on the uptake at times... (and I only mean when it comes to seeing people's true nature... he isn't dumb even though he's a jock)
