History and Personality: Tsukasa is the central character in the story of .hack//sign. He is blunt to the point of rude and a bit of a loner. Unlike other players, Tsukasa is unable to log out of The World. He is even unable to reset his computer. Tsukasa becomes stuck in The World and almost becomes a part of it himself - he has the ability to smell perfume and to feel pain. As a result of his ability to feel pain in particular, Tsukasa rarely fights. Rather, he chooses to avoid fights (and thus, most other characters as well). It takes a while for Tsukasa to trust other players. It takes him quite a lot of convincing to become friendly with Bear and Mimiru.
Despite Tsukasa's apparent weakness when it comes to pain and such, he has apparently received protection from a "Guardian". The Guardian is incredibly powerful and seems to appear whenever Tsukasa is threatened. Perhaps due to Tsukasa's own status in The World, his Guardian performs unusual damage to those that it attacks. Rather than simply having the player's character die, the player himself actually receives injury in the real world. Sometimes the injury is as light as a temporary headache or memory loss. But sometimes players in real life are actually knocked into a coma from being attacked in The World.
Tsukasa's predicament is just the first sign of problem in The World, and he may be the key to helping solve it. But he is reluctant to help anyone, especially as The self-proclaimed police force of The World and he don't start out on the best of terms. Tsukasa and his 'friends' set out on a quest to find the Key of the Twilight, hoping it will stabilize The World and allow Tsukasa to exit the game.
Tsukasa appears to have no memory of his past. The World seems to interfere with his personal emotions and memories. However, he appears to have a unique relationship with two characters; Maha (a "cat" player) and Aura (a white girl who's face cannot be identified). Maha usually appears when Tsukasa is near Aura. Aura floats above a bed and never talks to Tsukasa directly. When Tsukasa touches her, he has flashbacks from his past. He also experiences odd dreams/delusions about himself and Aura.
In the end Tsukasa, in the real world, turns out to be a girl whose mother is dead and who's father is emotionally unstable and neglects her. Also, she was ostracized by her peers growing up She has been in a coma in the hospital for the entirety of the series. According to the novel, .hack//ZERO Bear adopts Tsukasa after she is released from the hospital... We, of course, don't care about this as we love the Tsukasa from THE WORLD - who is most definitely a boy ^_^
Relationships: Tsukasa is a loner and does not much care to make friends. However, some people simply will not be ignored. One of these people is Mimiru, a heavyblade character who runs into Tsukasa early on and, despite his telling her he doesn't like her, keeps trying to find him and 'hang out'. Mimiru seems to feel that Tsukasa needs someone to befriend him and it may as well be here. Even before his importance is discovered she often tracks him down just to talk or invite him on a quest. Eventually he stops complaining, but whether his attitude towards her has really changed is uncertain.
Through Mimiru Tsukasa meets Bear, an older player who takes up a paternal role in his life. Bear's friend, BT, speculates that this is because Bear feels he has failed as a father to his own son. Tsukasa often does not welcome Bear's interference into his life, but rarely complains.
In the course of their journey to find the Key of the Twilight Tsukasa and his friends become caught up with Subaru, the Lady of the Crimson Knights (the self- proclaimed police force). After disbanding the Knights she joins Tsukasa and the others and the two become very close (though how is beyond me as they have very little personal interaction - and Subaru seems obsessed with Tsukasa even before they meet). They are so close that they are able to recognize one another in the real world immediately.
Tsukasa is the only player to interact with three very mysterious non-player entities in The World. The first is Maha, a cat player type who cannot speak but attempts to guide Tsukasa. The second is 'the guardian' a strange monster who offers to defend Tsukasa, but eventually tries to control him. The third is Aura, an unconscious girl floating in a hidden game area. These three entities appear to be the key to unraveling the mystery of the Key of the Twilight and righting The World.
Techniques: In the game Tsukasa is a Wavemaster. As such he uses spells and his staff to fight, and his ocarina to 'warp' out of an area. He also controls the guardian for the first portion of the series.
Why we love him: I have no earthly idea except that he's cute... maybe we're all like Mimiru and we just think someone that lonely and difficult must be hurting and longing for a friend on the inside.
