History and Personality:

Pharaoh Atem was the young Pharaoh who saved the world 5,000 years ago from utter destruction. Not very much is known about him, but he surrendered his life to save Egypt. Then his soul was placed in his Millennium Puzzle. After centuries, it was uncovered by Solomon Moto, who gave it to his grandson Yugi who reassembled the puzzle.

Yami is good and just, but he can sometimes be harsh as he has an ancient concept of justice.  He is confident, generally collected and calm, with great respect and compassion.  he is very loyal and protective of those close to him.  He is always willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of others, and can generally be found saving the world from some crazy or another who wants to use Shadow Magic to destroy everything.  When he can he prefers to "cleans" his enemies rather than destroy them. Yami is also an extremely talented strategist (and therefore duelist).  He enjoys games of all kinds, especially those involving strategy, but also those dealing with luck.  He believes strongly in destiny and the power of believing.  He also believes that even games should be treated with respect, this is probably because in his time the monsters he fought with were alive not mere cards.

When Yugi solved the Millennium Puzzle, he released Atem, who possessed his body. At first Yugi was unaware of Atem's presence, but eventually he learns about the spirit. Atem calls himself 'Yami', as he has no memory of his previous life. Yami made it his mission to protect Yugi, refusing to let anyone harm him. To punish evildoers, Yami uses his power called Mind Crush. Usually it sends a person's evil to the Shadow Realm, but it can also do horrible things to them if Yami is really mad.

At the beginning of the series Yami pretty much trails along with Yugi because all Yugi's problems happen to have millennium items at the root.  For example, Pegasus threatens Yugi's grandfather and Pegasus has the Millennium Eye.  Yugi wants his grandfather, Yami wants to stop crazies from using the Millennium items to steal souls, take over the world, and generally wreak havoc. Along the way the two have a few differences of opinion since Yami has a very ancient concept of justice and Yugi is overly forgiving.

Their only real argument is during the duel with Seto Kaiba (the reincarnation of Priest Seto, who was Atem's cousin) at Duelist Kingdom when Yami was going to allow Kaiba to die just to win.  For a time Yugi would not speak to Yami, but during Yugi's duel with Mai, Yami persuaded Yugi to give him a second chance, and since then Yami became less severe and more merciful.  The two defeat Pegasus and expel his evil (and deal with his head issues from losing his fiancée) and then head back home.

After that, Yugi promised the spirit that they would uncover the mysteries of his past. They run into an Egyptian family that has protected Yami's tomb through the millennia.  But the son, Marik, isn't too happy about his thankless task.  He has developed a split personality and the second personality (who is very evil) uses Kaiba's new tournament to try to destroy Yami.  Yami wins and frees Marik from his evil half.  All of this  leads to Yami learning that he was Pharaoh, and that the Egyptian God cards would restore his memory. He obtained Slifer, then Obelisk, and finally Ra. From seeing the markings on Marik's back, Yami realized that the tablet held his memory...

However, once at the museum, someone stole the three God Cards from Yugi before Yami could regained his memory. That person was Dartz, the leader of DOOM. But, as a way to counter DOOM (I swear they called it something different in the English dub anime, but I can't find it so we'll go with this), Yugi gained the Legendary Dragon Card Timaeus. Unfortunately, Yami's anger was played by Raphael and they lost their duel as a result, with Yugi paying the price with his soul taken instead of Yami. Now a guilt-driven Yami intends to save his friend and stop DOOM.

After defeating Dartz there is a minor detour in which Yami helps Yugi to.. help Kaiba... all kind of by accident.  After this the gang returns home, but Yami is once again plagued by his memories.  Yugi promises they will start the search again, but their hand is forced when Yami Bakura steals the items and tells Yami to meet him in Egypt.  With the help of the Ishtars Yami and the gang make it to his tomb where they are sucked into Yami's memories and forced to once again save ancient Egypt from the Shadow Realm.

As Yami goes back in time to see his lost memory, he ended up in Egypt, when he was being inaugurated pharaoh (which was 5000 years ago). There were six priests there to greet him, Priest Seto (Priest Seth in Japanese), Priest Mahado (a.k.a. The Dark Magician), Priest Karim, Priestess Isis (who is reborn as Ishizu), High Priest Aknadin, and Priest Shada (who is reborn as Shadi). Every priest possessed a millennium item.

One night, after a display of all the millennium items use, Thief Bakura came and wanted to kill everybody, including Yami. Thief Bakura wanted to bring an evil darkness over the entire world, reviving the god, Zork. As Yami played out his role as pharaoh, Thief Bakura began destroying Yami's kingdom, using his duel monster, Diabound, to start his plans to raise Zork. For a while, Yami and his priests fought Thief Bakura, but then, Priest Aknadin turned against the pharaoh (since Thief Bakura made his greed turn him against the priests), and then Aknadin revived Zork. Then he wanted, his son, Priest Seto (nobody at the time knew that Aknadin was Seto's father) to became the pharaoh of darkness. Eventually, Aknadin was killed by Kisara (Blue-Eyes White Dragon).

As time went on, Priest Karim, Shadda, and Isis were killed. Mahado sacrificed himself to become pharaoh's slave to protect him. In the end, the gang (Tea Yugi Mutou, Tristan, and Joey) had to find Yami Yugi's real name, which was Atemu/Atem. With Yami Yugi's name known, Yami Yugi summoned Obelisk, Ra, and Osiris, and fused them together (using his name as the key), to create THE Light Halakti. Zork then is killed, and so is Thief Bakura, and Yami Bakura! As the memory fades, Atem asked Priest Seto to take the position as pharaoh

Then, the Ceremonial Battle begins. This duel determines whether Yami no Yugi would share the same body as Yugi Mutou, or whether he moves on to the next life. Sadly, Yugi Mutou wins, and Yami Yugi looses. Yugi cries, wishing that Yami could stay, and Yami tries to console his little friend. Even all his friends began to cry, since they shared a wonderful, friendly bond with Yami no Yugi. Yugi said that he would never forget Yami no Yugi. Then, Yami no Yugi says his last good-bye, and moves on to the World of the Dead where he is reunited with his father and his court in the afterlife. Sadly enough, that is the end of Yami no Yugi.

Relationships:   Yami is friends with all of Yugi's friends, though he obviously doesn't often have the chance to "hang out" with them.  Still, he cares for them deeply and will go to great lengths to protect them.  The only one he really interacts with in a non-dueling/crisis situation is Tea, and then only once.  She has a crush on him, but he seems to view her as he does all of Yugi's friends.

Obviously he is closest to Yugi as they share Yugi's body and can sense each other's thoughts increasingly as time goes by.  The two are very close and Yami is extremely protective of Yugi.

The relationship between Yami/Yugi and Kaiba is constantly changing throughout the series, made all the more complicated by the fact that Kaiba generally refuses to believe that Yami even exists.  They are always rivals, sometimes unwilling partners, and occasionally something close to friends. In the beginning they are enemies, but Yami seems to view Kiaba as a victim rather than a villain, and he sends Kaiba's darkness to the shadow Realm.  When Kaiba promptly "goes out and gets it back", as I like to say, Yami appears to give up on him and is willing to let him die.  However, Yugi stops him.  After that Yami seems to treat Kaiba as a victim again and works to save him along with the others.  While there is no love lost between them, the two do seem to have a mutual respect by the end of the series.

During the series Yugi and Yami have many enemies, however, the only one with whom Yami seems to have any sort of relationship is Yami Bakura, who is also from the ancient past.  Yami Bakura was a thief whose village was destroyed by Atem's uncle in a Shadow experiment when Bakura was only a child.  Bakura grew up believing it was the fault of the Pharaoh, and because of this he hates the new Pharaoh, Atem.  Since Yami Bakura has a few vague memories of his past he despises Yami in the present. In the end it turns out he has been controlled by Zork, an ancient and evil monster, for most of his existence.  Yami seems to pity him more than he hates him.

Marik and the rest of the Ishtars are also connected to Yami through their family's tradition of service to the Pharaoh's tomb.  This leads Ishizu to help him, and Marik to hate him for a time and then later help him.  While Yami appreciates their help they are more acquaintances and, perhaps, subjects than friends.

In the ancient past Yami had seven advisors to whom he was close, including his cousin Seto.  He was also close to Mana, a pupil of one of his advisors.

Deck: ...This... will be very long.  Since he's the main character, and he changes decks just abut every season.. you have been warned! For the sake of space all the notable cards from the decks Yugi and Yami used together and in one list.  Only the cards Yami used when dueling against Yugi at the very end of the series are in a separate list.  Yugi's deck is well-known for the Dark Magician (Black Magician in the original Japanese versions). It is likely the most varied and balanced deck in the series, and is sometimes referred to as a Strategy Deck. Yugi's original deck is mostly composed of low-level Earth monsters and Dark monsters. During the Battle City Arc, he maintains the theme and his Magnet Warriors become a major part of his deck, as does his Dark Magician Girl. After Battle City, Yugi focuses not only on his Dark Magician, but also on magic cards that destroy and/or negate the effects of his opponents' magic and trap cards.

Atem's Deck - Millennium World

During the Millennium World and Ceremonial Battle arcs, Yugi and Atem use different decks of cards that represent their own characters. Yugi uses a deck with toy-based monsters and level monsters, while Atem's deck has a focus on the Dark Magician and the Egyptian God cards. Some of their Duelist Kingdom and Battle City cards still appear.

Trivia:

Yugi's family name, Mutou, usually romanized as Mutou in the English manga. Mutou is sometimes romanized as Mutoh in the English manga, and Mutou in the uncut anime DVDs. In the English anime, his name is romanized as Yugi Muto, though the surname is pronounced as Moto. In the English video games, it is Muto or Moto. In the ani-manga of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Movie, Yugi's last name is "Muto".   All of the versions of the dubbed anime of Indo-European languages use Yugi Muto.  The Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Italian versions of the manga use Yugi Muto.  The French version of the manga use Yûgi Muto. The German version of the manga uses Yugi Mutô. The Japanese-language Yu-Gi-Oh! website romanizes his name as Yuhgi Mutoh.

Kazuki Takahashi spells out Atem's name as "A-T-E-M-U" in the hieroglyphics that reveal his name, in both the manga and the anime. This has sparked a heavy debate among the fans about whether the creator intended for the name to be Atem or Atemu. Some believe that this is a case of Engrish, and that Takahashi did not do enough research. Others believe that he had, and that the "U" ought to be included. Still others point out that the hieroglyphics were written erroneously and should not be taken into consideration when translating his name from Japanese to English.

Why we love him:
