Name: Yue
Alias(es):
Race: ... Angel? Well, Clow Reed created him so... maybe he has no race...
Age: 1000
Hair: Silver
Eyes: Icy blue
Blood Type: AB
Family: Creator, Clow Reed
Status: Guardian of the Cards (moon guardian)
Quote: If you knew that you were coming back why did you make us choose a new master?
Anime: Card Captor Sakura/ Cardcaptors
Voice: (English) Sam Vincent, Steve Cannon (in the movie) (Japanese) Megumi Ogata
History and Personality: Yue is the one of two Guardians of the Clow Cards, along with Keroberos (Cerberus). While Keroberos acts as the elector, choosing a candidate to become the next Master of the Clow, Yue is the judge who will test the candidate. He is cold and aloof and much more serious and intimidating than his counterpart, Keroberos. He shares a special bond with Clow that makes it hard for him to accept Sakura Kinomoto (Sakura Avalon in Cardcaptors) as a "replacement" for his creator although he later comes to accept her as a friend. Yue has jurisdiction over all things wind and water, the elements from which he draws his power.
Yue makes his first appearance when Sakura, the Cardcaptor, captures the final Clow Card, The Earthy. He then announces that he must judge Sakura's worthiness: if she can defeat him in combat, she can be the Master of the Cards. However, since he is another form of Yukito Tsukishiro (Julian Star), a young man for whom Sakura cares deeply, she is reluctant to harm him. In addition, Yue was determined that nobody succeed Clow Reed. Eventually, Sakura manages to overcome both her own fear and Yue's arrogance and wins him over.
Afterwards, Yue becomes a more active protector of Sakura. The presence of his true form becomes too great for Sakura's magic to support him, and the strain soon threatens his own existence and that of Yukito. Eriol Hiiragizawa's (Eli Moon) guardian Ruby Moon realizes that the magical powers of Toya Kinomoto (Tori Avalon), Sakura's brother, could save him, but Julian does not (it also does not help that Yukito does not realize that he is Yue). However Toya Kinomoto (Tory Avalon) realizes what was going on and finally offers Yue his power, securing his and Yukito's survival.
Yue finally aids Sakura in her final confrontation with Eriol, and then confronts Eriol to ask why he was made to find a new Master while Clow Reed (albeit a reincarnation) still existed. Eriol responds that, though he has retained all of Clow's memories and most of his magic, he himself is not Clow Reed, and it was Clow's wish that Sakura be the new Master.
Yue's appearance is that of a beautiful young man with long silver hair and violet (blue in the anime) cat-like eyes. He has a pair of angelic wings that he can use to fly.
Beyond his role as The Judge, Yue was also a favored companion to Clow Reed. Yue is extermely attached to his creator, Clow Reed. He is highly intelligent, stern, and usually cool and focused, although prone to fury when Clow or (later) Sakura is endangered.
Just what role Clow expected Yue to play in the drama surrounding his successor is unclear. He may have expected Yue to fixate on Sakura the way he had fixated on Clow himself. The false form of Yukito was clearly designed to be everything that would be attractive to Sakura, and she did harbor a massive crush on him for a very long time. However, Yukito did not return her feelings, something Clow admitted that he did not predict. Yue's consciousness is separate from Yukito's, but Eriol has speculated that "their hearts are not as far apart as he believes." This is a similar belief voiced by Sakura and Toya, who both said Yue and Yukito were exactly alike, much to the confusion and embarrassment of Yue.Relationships: Yue is not overly friendly and forms few attachments, but those that he forms are strong. For example, Yue was completely devoted to his creator and first master, Clow Reed. Even 1000 years after the sorcerer's death Yue did not wish to choose a replacement for him. According to Kero, Yue was also Clow's favorite.
While it takes Yue some time to get used to the idea of having Sakura as his new master once he has accepted this fact he is extremely loyal to her and protective of her. He is often concerned for her, though he does not like to admit it as he is reserved and attempts to portray a dispassionate image. Yue becomes very angry when Sakura is placed in danger - it is the only time he seems to show emotion at all.
Yue and Keroberos are polar opposites and often disagree, though Yue is too stoic for them to actually argue. However, their strengths compliment one another and they are a good team in battle. They are close though perhaps not intimate enough to truly be considered 'friends'. they are more like siblings (which makes sense since Clow created them both...)
Yue does not often interact with others. His other self knows nothing of his existence and Touya, though he knows, does not really seem to understand exactly what Yue is. The two have very little interaction and when they do it is focused on saving Sakura or Yukito. Touya gives Yue his magic after making the guardian promise to protect both Yukito and Sakura.
Yue also has some interaction with Sakura's friends, though he seems not to form an opinion on them one way or another. However, it is Yue who convinces Syaoran (Li) to stay and assist Sakura after she becomes the master of the cards.
Techniques: Yue is a capable fighter who can raise powerful magical barriers, send deadly diamond (could be ice) shards at his adversaries, and shoot energy arrows from an energy bow, in addition to other magical attacks. Yue's skill with the bow manifests itself even in his human form, as can be seen in the bow and arrow competition against the Math teacher, Kaho Mizuki. His other form, Yukito is seen firing normal arrows that unfailingly land on the bull's eye. As the final confrontation with Ruby Moon demonstrates, he is a truly formidable combatant when enraged. Obviously he can also fly...
Trivia: Yue means "moon" in Mandarin Chinese. The kanji for moon is the same in Chinese and Japanese, but is pronounced "tsuki" in Japanese. Because his name is not of Japanese origin, Yue's name is spelled in katakana, not hiragana (so as to imply the correct pronunciation).
in the manga both Yue and Ruby are genderless. Although it is highly speculated by fans that Yue was in love with Clow Reed, there is no official proof of this fact. Such hints are limited to the manga.
Why we love him: Seriously? You have to ask? he's tall, has long silver hair, and is downright gorgeous. Plus, he has the stoic, silent, amazing fighter thing down pat (like Aoshi!). And even though he is, for the most part, not very emotional he is loyal and protective and thoughtful. Remember when he cleaned the house while Sakura was rescuing Kero from the mess he'd made? So sweet!
