History and Personality: Attractive and popular, Yuki is the heartthrob of his high school. Even though he is often encountered by a Yuki fan club, run by the crazy girls who love him, he does not accept any girl's crush on him or let any girl hug him. However, he confesses his love for Tohru Honda in volume 11 and end of 10 in the manga series, though it was later revealed that his love for Tohru was not romantic, but actually more along the lines of thinking of her as a maternal figure. This is possibly a result of his distant relationship with his real mother (see below).
As a child, Yuki was traumatized by Akito Sohma, the leader of the Sohma family. When Yuki was younger Akito Sohma was cruel to Yuki and told him terrible things that Yuki could never forget. He locked him in a dark room and was often physically abusive as well. Yuki's worst enemy would be Kyo Sohma, the cat of the zodiac. Hatsuharu Sohma felt animosity towards Yuki during part of their childhood because of the story often told to Haru about the rat taking advantage of the stupid cow, which made Haru develop an inferiority complex towards his older cousin. However, after actually meeting Yuki face to face Haru was able to see Yuki's extreme kindness and the two became close allies.
Yuki also feels a close connection with his cousin Kisa Sohma, as Kisa was teased because the children in her class thought she was different from others. Until Tohru Honda touched her heart, she couldn't speak and didn't go to school. Likewise Yuki, despite his popularity, rarely interacted with anyone on a personal level and was extremely private and introverted. Until he met Tohru, Yuki was afraid of becoming close to anyone because of an incident during his childhood when his secret was discovered by his friends during a game of tag, when Akito ordered Hatori Sohma to erase the children's memories, thus leaving Yuki alone and without friends. After meeting Tohru, Yuki started warming up to other people and becomes much more social, and while still keeping his fanclub, begins to pursue his own love interests.
Yuki also appears to have respiratory problems, due to weak bronchi, and gets regular checkups from Hatori to monitor his condition. In his childhood these attacks were apparently frequent and was one of the reasons he was kept in the main house, to the point that his older brother Ayame Sohma began to forget he even had a younger brother because of their extended separation.
After Kyo was freed from the curse, a series of events was triggered and the rest of the cursed Sohma family members became free. Yuki is the last Sohma member to be freed, noticing this as he was talking to Machi. The god spirit had taken the rat spirit, with the god thanking Yuki for keeping his promise for a long time. Perhaps Yuki was the last one to be freed because he was the rat, the first of the 12shi.
Relationships:
Kyo - Yuki and Kyo have an intense dislike of one another. This is partly because of their natures (rat vs. cat) and their roles in the zodiac story (the rat tricked the cat). They also have very different personalities: Yuki is quiet and calm and eager to please others, while Kyo is loud, brash, and could care less but somehow still seems to attract people. Their animosity is amplified by Akito's promise that Kyo will not be locked away if he can beat Yuki in a fight. We also discover that Yuki and Kyo envy one another. Yuki wishes he could reveal his true self to others as easily as Kyo, and Kyo wishes he was as capable and calm as Yuki. Hopefully this will one day become the grounds for respect between the two once the curse is broken. Through Tohru's influence the two become less violent toward one another, and throughout the series there are instances where we see that Yuki and Kyo know and understand one another better than anyone else, they can sense subtle changes in one another's mood and are often concerned for one another, though they won't let it show.
Tohru - Yuki likes Tohru from the first time he stumbles upon her outside Shigure's door. At first he simply treats her as he treats all girls, with respect and kindness, but it soon becomes clear that he is far warmer and open with her than with the rest of his female classmates. In fact, Tohru may be his first real friend of either gender. Early on she seems to have a crush on him, and it becomes very obvious that he loves her. Later it is revealed that when they were much younger they met and were one another's 'first love's. However, as Tohru grows closer to Kyo her relationship with Yuki settles into a deep friendship.
Machi - In the later portion of the manga Yuki becomes close to Machi, a member of the Student Council with emotional problems similar to his own. It is speculated that he would have told her of the curse, but by the time he had a chance without interruptions he had been freed, and so instead he tells her that he has recently parted with someone who shares his burdens forever. He eventually gives her permission to call him by his first name, and even kisses her.
Shigure - Yuki has evidently lived with Shigure for some years and is fairly tolerant of him, except when he makes inappropriate remarks to or concerning Tohru - then he gets mad. I can't say that he really respects Shigure, but they do get along and I believe Yuki is grateful to Shigure for running interference with Akito.
Hatsuharu - Hatsuharu practically idolizes Yuki due to his kindness to him when they were children. While Yuki tolerates Haru's umm... infatuation... he does not return it. He does not appear to have much interaction with Haru and treats him with the same gentle respect he treats most people with. When Haru begins attending High School with the others the two form a friendship of sorts, though they still are not close.
Ayame - Ayame is Yuki's older brother, and the two couldn't be more different. Ayame is flamboyant and loud and often indecent. He seems obsessed with building a relationship with his little brother, feeling he neglected him when they were younger. However, Yuki finds Ayame annoying and perverted and downright hates him at the series' beginning. Much of this is based on the "neglect" Ayame admits to. The two had a strained relationship when Yuki was a child, Ayame tells Tohru that because of his brother's poor health Yuki and himself would often be separated for long periods of time, to the point Ayame almost forgot he had a younger brother. The rift between the two was cemented when a young Yuki tried to reach out to Ayame after Akito's mistreatment, but Ayame merely responded by pulling away. With prompting from Tohru, Yuki attempts to learn about his brother by visiting his store, which despite resulting in a large amount of disgust and shock from Yuki gives the brothers time to be honest with each other, even if that translated to an argument between the two. After Ayame's dramatic entrance during Yuki's parent-teacher conference with his domineering mother, in which he gives Yuki the confidence to reject his mother's control, the relationship between the two seems to improve greatly.
Mother - The fact that both Ayame and Yuki are members of the Jyunishi is quite unusual since it is very rare that any of the Jyunishi are siblings at any given time. Because their mother was unable to force Ayame to bend to her will, she turned to Yuki and controlled every aspect of his life, including which schools he went to and what he would do after high school in college. Yuki became both emotionally fragile and detached in her attempts to gain status and wealth within the family while she bluntly and tactlessly shot down any attempts he made to refuse her wishes. This changes during a parent-teacher conference in which his mother gave him no say in his future, prompting Yuki to finally refuse her attempts after Ayame burst in dramatically and gave Yuki the confidence to stand up for his own ideals and dreams.
Akito - Yuki is almost terrified of Akito due to the abuse he suffered when he was very young and sickly, though Akito now appears to be more tolerant toward Yuki than the others - perhaps because Yuki is so obedient. However, when Akito threatens Tohru it gives Yuki the strength to stand against him.
Techniques: Yuki practices martial arts, as does the rest of the family. Don't know what kind, but he's evidently better than Kyo, especially when half-asleep, which leads Kyo to believe Yuki holds out on him the rest of the time..
Why we love him: For the same reasons he has a fanclub... he's cute, he's kind, he's quiet and serious and caring, and his smile will make you melt! Plus, he has emotional and health issues, so he brings out our maternal side. Anyone got a problem with that? Huh?
