Demons!
“Maybe you were right Kurama.”
“Hmm?” Kurama turned to look at Yusuke.
“Well, we’re well into the scared forest right?
And I haven’t seen any
demons.”
Yusuke kicked absently at the ground, “Maybe there never were any
demons.”
“That’s a good thing, right?” Yusuke hadn’t sounded very happy
in Kurama’s opinion.
“Oh, yeah.” Yusuke smiled, “It’s just, I haven’t had a good
fight in such a long time.” He shrugged.
Kurama grinned. Leave it
to Yusuke. That boy was unhappy
no matter what happened!
Kurama’s grin faded as his eyes focused on the forest just ahead.
It was decimated.
There was a large rut in the ground.
Or rather, a series of deep gashes, as though something had been drug
through the forest, or a giant had slashed it with his axe.
A thin layer of smoke was still in the air. The trees, and there
weren’t many left, were charred and gutted.
It made Kurama sick just seeing it. He stretched out with his ki (or
youki, I’m not sure which he uses when he’s Shuichi), but nothing could be
done. The trees were dead. He
winced.
“What happened?” Sakura’s eyes were like saucers.
What could have done something like this?
“Well,” Yusuke’s fist clenched involuntarily, “I guess this
rules out that idea.”
“I have not seen such senseless destruction since the revolution.”
Kenshin looked indescribably weary, but not nearly as bad as Kurama, who
seemed to have trouble standing. Yami
had stepped next to him, offering support (both literally and emotionally).
Somehow, he could tell, Kurama had a connection to the trees.
“Such waste.” Yue said sadly.
Suddenly Yami’s head
jerked up,, “Yugi, I sense something.”
Kuwabara glared at him, “Hey! That’s my line!”
Sakura’s eyes locked with Li’s and he nodded slowly.
Yes, they both sensed it as well.
A very powerful magic.
“Argh! Why can’t I ever sense anything?!” Yusuke punched a
charred tree, causing bits to fall to the ground.
Kurama winced painfully. “Sorry
Kurama.” Yusuke muttered. Kurama
leaned more heavily on Yami.
Yami Bakura grinned, his ring glowing, “I sense a great evil here.”
Bakura looked at him confusion mixed with fear in his eyes, “You
sound happy about that.” He observed timidly.
“I am.” Bakura backed away from his yami.
He gulped, “Um…okay.”
Yami Bakura smiled. This
was fun. Now he could scare his host, and
all those other people too. Mortals were so weak.
They heard a sound nearby and they turned toward it. Before them stood
five rough looking
demons.
They were tall, and muscular, and varied in color.
The one in the middle (I’m guessing the leader, I mean, leaders seem
to like to stand in the middle right?) Flexed his arms menacingly and smirked.
“Like what we’ve done to the place?” He asked, casually motioning
to the surrounding forest.
“Not really.” Yusuke said flippantly, though his body tensed.
The
demon
cocked his head, “No? What a
shame. I did it just for you, Detective.”
Yusuke growled.
“This is terrible!” Botan cried.
“This is a sacred forest! You
won’t get away with this!”
“Oh, won’t I?” The
demon
leader snapped his fingers and a hoard of
demons
came out from the shadows.
Hiei reached for his sword.
He reached again.
His eyes widened. Where
was his sword!?
“Looking for this?” Yami Bakura was studying Hiei’s sword with
interest, weighing it from hand to hand, running his finger along the flat of
it.
“Hn. How did you get that?” Hiei snapped.
“Good question.” Bakura put in.
Yami Bakura flipped his hair back and grinned, “Ancient thief,
remember?”
“Give it back, tomb robber.” Yami warned, his eyes narrowing.
“Or what?” Yami Bakura sneered, “You’ll sentence me to a
beating? You’ve no servants
here pharaoh.”
Yami shrugged, “Fine. Keep
it.” Yami Bakura’s eyes narrowed even further.
That had been far too easy.
“Uh, oh.” Yugi ducked behind Yami, not wanting to see what he knew
was coming next.
Yami Bakura blinked and the sword was gone.
“What the-” he stared dumbly at his now empty hands.
“Thank you.” A voice sounded behind him just before something hard
hit the base of his skull. He
fell to the ground. Hiei did a flip and landed in front of him facing outward.
“Fool.” He grunted.
“I’ll show you whose a fool!” Yami Bakura growled.
Hiei turned to find his opponent standing.
<How the heck is he standing?> Hiei was so shocked he couldn’t
move.
“Whoa.” Kuwabara breathed, knowing from experience how hard Hiei
hit.
Yusuke whistled, “That guy is tough.”
Bakura sneered as he approached Hiei.
“You think that hurt? I’ve
had far worse.” He snorted, “I’ve done more than that to myself.”
Bakura winced and held his arm, where his yami had cut it at Battle
City. “I’ve the scars to prove it.” He said quietly.
Sakura rested a reassuring hand on his arm, and he gave her a small
smile. Li scowled.
A laugh sounded from in front of them.
“Your friends are amusing Spirit Detective.” The leader of the
demons
snickered. “Perhaps I won’t need my fiends after all!”
Yusuke glared at him, “I’ll show you!” he charged.
The leader easily dodged, giving Yusuke a backhand as he did.
Yusuke fell face first on the ground.
“I’m coming Yusuke!” Kuwabara dropped Julian near Yukina and
charged in without thinking (so what else is new?)
Soon he too was on the floor.
Hiei looked to Kurama, who was still too weak to stand on his own,
before snorting and abandoning Yami Bakura to assist his ‘team mates’.
Yami Bakura would have followed, but a look at Yami stopped him.
Hiei moved like lightening, striking his opponent again and again, but
nothing happened.
He fell back, breathing hard (and he very rarely does that).
The leader of the
demons
grinned and motioned for his
demons
(who had simply stood there as the three men had attacked him) to move
forward. With grins that looked more like a simple bearing of teeth
they moved forward.
Kenshin took his stance, then drew his sword and attacked several of
the advancing
demons
at once.
“Wow, he’s fast.” Keiko remarked. Yukina nodded, wide-eyed as she
tended Julian.
“Let me, go.” Kurama said brokenly, trying to step away from Yami.
“I must- fight.”
Yami shook his head, “I don’t think so.”
He looked up to see ten
demons
bearing down on them. The eye on
his forehead began to glow. His
hand lifted, “Mind, CRUSH!” the
demons
shattered.
Kurama chuckled, “Well, that’s something you don’t see
everyday.”
Yami smiled, but more
demons
were coming.
“Here.” Kurama pulled out a rose.
Yami’s eyes widened in disbelief, “What’s that for?”
Kurama chuckled wearily once more, “You’ll see.” Sending forth
his energy the rose became his rose whip and he expertly sliced it through the
oncoming hoard.
“I see.” Yami sounded impressed, “interesting.”
“Thank you.”
Yami Bakura had tried to avoid the combat, in fact, he had succeeded,
but it was too good to last. The
hoard was approaching his hikari, and, as much as he hated to admit it, he
would need the boy when they returned to their own universe.
Jumping between the
demons
and the two frightened hikari (that’d be Bakura and Yugi – Yami’s a
little busy) Yami Bakura used his millennium ring to summon monsters from the
shadow realm (how that worked, considering he’s in another universe is
beyond me, but then, the Shadow realm is kinda another universe anyway)
Yusuke and company were on their feet once more, and were attacking the
lead five
demons, and
Kurama had finally gotten enough strength to join them.
Yue had taken it upon himself to protect the YYH girls (they had
Julian!) as well as Sakura and Li – who still weren’t using any magic,
just good old fashioned hand-to-hand. It
was a good thing they were both so fit and well trained.
Still, he occasionally had to send a barrage of blue crystals their
direction, piercing
demons.
Lan was between a tree and Megaman, who was using his blaster to
disintegrate any
demon
who came near his precious net op (think clean people, please). Ash and Misty
had pulled out most of their pokemon to protect themselves. And Takuya had
somehow managed to spirit evolve – even though he wasn’t in the digital
world (ever wonder how they do that in the real world?
I mean, it’s just weird!).
“Wow, that’s cool!” Lan and Ash just stared at him.
“Look out!” Agunimon sent a wall of flame to protect them just in
time.
In all the commotion of
battle, no one noticed that one small
demon
had slipped away. (And who can blame them? I mean, there were a lot of
demons!)
That is until he reappeared high above them.
“Hee hee hee!” He laughed maniacally.
But, of course, no one heard him (twenty three people, and who knows
how many
demons and he
expected them to hear him! Please. *Author rolls her eyes* pathetic.)
The demon
cleared his throat, “Ahem. I
said HEE HEE HEE!” Still no one
listened.
“HEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” his shout echoed through the forest and
everyone turned to look up at him. “Thank
you.” He said in a normal voice. “Now,
where was I?” He thought for a
moment, “Oh yes!” he cleared his throat, “Hee hee hee.”
“Nice evil laugh.” Yami Bakura muttered sarcastically.
The
demon
glared at him before continuing, “I have something precious to you, and if
you promise to go away I’ll give it back.”
“And if we don’t?” Yusuke didn’t see what that filthy creature
could have that he would care about.
“Then I drop her.” The
demon
said evilly, pulling a kicking Keiko from behind his back.
“KEIKO!” Yusuke yelled.
The YYH girls looked at each other in confusion.
When had Keiko gone missing? Yue
was a little confused as well. Why
hadn’t he sensed anything?
“Give her back you creep!” Yusuke shouted.
“Not unless you promise to leave us be.” The
demon
insisted.
“Don’t do it Yusuke!” Keiko had tears in her eyes, but she truly
meant it.
Yusuke’s jaw clenched. <Keiko>
he felt a helpless desperation set in. What
could he do?
“You know you can’t agree.” Botan said softly, her eyes
shimmering. Yusuke nodded.
Time seemed frozen for everyone on the ground.
What could they do? What
could they possibly do? They were
too far to take her, too far to save her.
She would die!
“Time’s up.” The
demon
sneered. “Farewell, fair Keiko.” He dropped her.
“Nooooooooooooo!!!” Yusuke rushed toward her, but there was nothing
he could do. The
demon
had dropped her over a cliff. He
couldn’t reach her.
Yue, or Takuya (who had now taken his beast spirit form) would have
flown to her, but they were restrained. It
was hopeless.
“Element wind, come to my aid!” Li acted quickly.
A cushion of air swirled beneath Keiko, preventing the girl from
hitting the ground far below. She
rose back up to their level and was gently lowered to the ground.
“Hey, that’s a neat trick!” Lan exclaimed.
The others nodded
“Nice sword.” Hiei said derisively. Li just ignored him, recalling the sword and placing the
necklace about his neck.
Sakura eyed him, “Thought we were keeping our magic a secret.” she
said pointedly.
He turned to face her, “Would you rather I had let her die?” he
asked seriously. She looked away.
“No fair! NO FAIR! NO FAIR!!!” The
demon
squealed.
“Oh, shut up!” Yusuke shot him clean through with his spirit gun.
The little
demon
flew farther and farther away until he was completely out of sight.
“Impressive.” Kurama remarked, “he didn’t even look to aim.”
“Hn.” Hiei nodded his
agreement with Kurama’s assessment.
“You okay Keiko?” Yusuke asked, trying to return his breathing to
normal. Keiko nodded, shakily.
“So touching.” The
demon
leader smirked. “But enough of
that!” And with that he and his minions attacked once more.
This time Sakura and Li used their own magic to combat the
demons.
Yami was still using mind crush, Yami Bakura was still summoning shadow
monsters, Takuya was serving them crispy fried, and everyone else was still
doing their thing. Botan had
pulled out her oar and she loaned Keiko her baseball bat, Shizeru had opted
for good old fashioned fists.
All in all,
demons
were dropping like flies. Unfortunately
there seemed to be an endless supply of them.
“Enough!” the
demon
leader called out. “Ready! Aim! Fire!”
The gang pulled back in terror. The
demons had unleashed
their ultimate weapon!

[A/N: evil author! I know. I already admitted to that. But, hey, it’s my only cliff hanger in the whole fic (I think) and it’s not like you have to wait to read the next chappie – so deal ^_^ ]
I wanna know what the weapon is!
Quite whining.
Tune in next chappie.
