Kikyo was the priestess responsible for the protection and purification of the sacred jewel 50 years before the past portion of the show takes place. She and Inuyasha fell in love, but she was killed by Naraku.  Because he tricked her into thinking Inuyasha had attacked her, she sealed Inuyasha to the God tree.  She was later resurrected by an old hag using part of Kagome's soul (as Kagome is her reincarnation). She now lives on the souls of the dead.  Kikyo now knows the truth about Naraku and she seems to be after him, but she still hates Inuyasha.  Oddly enough, she wants to take Inuyasha to hell with her and is very possessive of him...  She is beautiful, and sometimes helpful, but cold and often unkind.
