Yutaro wants to become a swordsman so much that he is misguided and used by a man claiming to be a teacher.  He becomes a friend after Kenshin and the others save him; and he becomes the Kamiya dojo's second student. He and Yahiko have quite a rivalry going on, but they really are friends.  He moves to Germany, but continues to work on his swordsmanship and eventually returns in the third season to stop a very dangerous group of German and Japanese fighters.
